What is the difference between the various domain names?


There are several types of domain that we can register for you. They are all visible globally and registered for you globally. The following domain types are available to you without restriction.

.com Very popular - signifies a commercial company.
.co.uk Very Popular - signifies a UK based company.
.net Becoming popular - signifies an internet based company.
.org signifies a non-profit-making organisation.
.org.uk signifies a non-profit-making organisations, who are based in the UK.
.uk.com an alternative to .co.uk and .com (charged as .com).
.uk.net an alternative to .co.uk and .net (charged as .com).

The following domain types are available with certain restrictions.
.ltd.uk / .plc.uk : These are for UK based companies that are registered Ltd/Plc companies. See restrictions below for these names.

What do I need to register a .ltd.uk or .plc.uk domain?

To register a .ltd.uk domain, you need to comply with the following restrictions:
1, Your company must be a valid registered Ltd/Plc company.
2, The name that you register must be an accurate representation of your company name.
You must provide your companies registration number when applying as this will be checked by the authorising body prior to approval. These domain do take several days to be registered as they are done manually.
The domain name can leave out the word 'The' if it is present at the beginning of the company name. The word 'and' can be left out if required. Spaces must be removed or replaced with '-'.

The registration is valid for 2 years, what happens in 2 years time?

After 2 years the name comes up for renewal, you as the owner have the right to renew this name before it expires. You will be sent an invoice for the renewal fee (the registration fee current at that time) approximately 1 month before it is due. If you choose to pay this before the expiry date the domain is yours for another two years.

What does Email Forwarding mean?

It means that all emails sent to your domain name (info@yourdomain-name, sales@yourdomain-name, peter@yourdomain-name) will be re-directed to a single email address that you indicated when you joined TeesdaleOnline.

How do I change my Email Forwarding?

You have to send an email to support@teesdaleonline.co.uk, indicating your domain name and the new email forwarding address.

What does Web Forwarding mean?

It means that your domain name can be re-directed to a valid URL (web address) of your choice.

How do I change my Web Forwarding?

You have to send an email tosupport@teesdaleonline.co.uk, indicating your domain name and the new web forwarding address.

How long does a domain take to activate?

For domains ending in .uk (.co.uk, .org.uk, etc) it will take approximately 24 hours. For .com, .org and .net it will take approximately 48 hours. This also includes email and web-forwarding.

How do I upload my pages into my Web Space with TOL?

You need a to use ftp (File Transfer Protocol) software. Connect to the server using the login details provided in your Welcome to TeesdaleOnline letter.

I just upgraded my domain name with some space, why do I get the following message: 'Forbiden. You do not have permission to access...'?

You need to ensure that you have uploaded an index.htm (or index.html) page under your public-html directory.

Do you support FRONT PAGE extentions?

Yes we do.

What is a POP3 account?

It is a is a private mailbox attached to your domain name, this stores incoming mail for your domain (or for an alias of your domain) and allows you to log in and collect your mail.

Can I run cgi scripts within my domain?

We offer a standard form response script for use by our clients (see below). We do allow clients to run their own scripts on the server, however you will need to purchase a cgi-bin upgrade to your domain package.

What is a cgi-bin directory?

This is a directory within your web space. It is activated to allow the execution of cgi programmes for your use. This is available as an upgrade to your domain package and can be ordered from the secure online 'Upgrade Order Form'.

Can I run enquiry forms within my domain?

Yes, we can offer a response script . This takes the contents of a form and sends it to an email address that you specify. Please send an email to support@teesdaleonline.co.uk requesting the setup instructions for cgi. form.

Can I use SSI(Server Side Includes) in my web page?

Yes, SSI is enabled for all sites hosted on our servers.

Domain Name Transfers

What is the procedure for transfering a domain to TeesdaleOnline?

For domains ending in .uk the owner(s) wiil need to instruct the current service provider to transfer control of the name to the IPS Tag 'ENTNET'.
For domains ending in .com, .org, or .net, You need to send a fax or email to TeesdaleOnline requesting that you have your domain transfered to us.

Please ensure that the current host of the name is fully aware of the transfer, otherwise the process may be held up indefinitely.

What is the procedure for transfering a domain away from TeesdaleOnline?

The Legal Registrant (owner) of the name must send a signed letter or fax to TOL Authorising the move. If owned by a company this must be on company letterhead and signed by a person who can legally bind the company (eg Director, CEO).
For domains ending in .uk you must provide the IPS tag of the new host. We will then proceed with the change.
For domains ending in .com, .net and .org, the new host must request a Modify to the details with the Authorising body. TOL will then authorise the transfer when we are contacted by the authorising body.

What is DNS Setup?

DNS Setup is what we need to do on our servers to enable a domain to be transferred to TOL. There is a one off charge for this service. When the domain is due for renewal (2 years from the date of original registration) you will be invoiced for the registration fee current at that time, for a further 2 years.
